The fox has long been a symbol of intuition, adaptability and quiet wisdom, a creature that exists at the edge of the seen and unseen. In folklore, it is often portrayed as a guide between worlds, moving effortlessly through forests at dawn and dusk, those liminal hours when certainty gives way to mystery.
Here, the fox sits beneath a total solar eclipse, one of nature’s rarest thresholds. For a few fleeting minutes, day becomes night, familiar landscapes are transformed, and the ordinary world feels suspended. Throughout history, eclipses have been viewed as moments of prophecy, transformation and revelation, and times when the veil between worlds grows thin.
The blazing corona forms a celestial halo behind the fox, elevating it from an earthly creature to something almost sacred. Rather than fearing the darkness, the fox gazes calmly towards the hidden sun, embodying trust in the unseen and reminding us that periods of obscurity are often the prelude to illumination.
The scorched branch beside it represents endings, sacrifice and renewal. Fire clears the old to make way for new growth, echoing the eclipse’s own symbolism of death and rebirth. The soft pink aura surrounding the fox hints at an inner light that cannot be eclipsed—an enduring spirit that remains even when the external world falls into shadow.
Part of the Eclipse series, this painting explores the liminal spaces where transformation occurs. It asks us to embrace uncertainty, to honour intuition over fear, and to recognise that some of life’s greatest changes happen not in full light, but in the brief, extraordinary darkness between what was and what is yet to come.
