Oil, acrylic and spray on gessoed birch wood box panel, 46x61x4cm. This piece features the stunning Jaguar, falling through the night sky in a suspended animation - which echoes is fall in numbers. Jaguars used to be abundant in Northern America but now only live in Central and some southern parts. In Mayan mythology, the jaguar was seen as the ruler of the Underworld, and as such, a symbol of the night sun and darkness - which has also been referenced to in this piece. Jaguars are also notoriously linked to psychedelic journeys induced by the traditional native consumption of Caapi roots, which the Jaguar itself also eats and seems to get a high from. The jaguar is symbolic of power, ferocity, and valor; but has been made to look vulnerable in contrast to this, in this dreamlike piece which is hinting more at the big cats other symbolic attributes such as that of being a dream-guide, a symbol of protection, telepathy, and transformation…
