The Sperm Whale occurs throughout the world's oceans and in the Mediterranean Sea abd is known for its torpedo-like body shape. Prior to whaling and plastic pollution Sperm Whales may have numbered 1.1 million worldwide, according to the American Cetacean Society. Today the number is perhaps 300,000. The sperm whale is federally listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The animal is safeguarded in U.S. waters by the Marine Mammal Protection Act and worldwide by international whaling agreements.
