Oil and acrylic on rose gold leaf, on cradled wooden panel, 11x10x2cm.
The Sacred Songbird Series reimagines familiar songbirds as divine, sacred figures, each perched in a luminous world of gold leaf with a gentle halo radiating around it. By presenting these birds in the style of religious icons, the paintings invite viewers to see the sacred in the natural world and draws attention to how even the smallest creatures can embody a sense of the divine, turning the birds we are accustomed to into something almost transcendent.
This one depicted the highly endangered Chatham Island Robin, which nearly went extinct in the 1980s, but now sits at around 400 robins currently due to conservation efforts. This rare and resilient bird symbolises the fragile beauty of endangered species and the quiet sanctity of life that persists against the odds. By placing the Chatham Island robin in this iconic context, the series honours the bird’s unique story .
