The number of Okapis in the wild is estimated to be about 10,000 to 35,000 individuals, with some sources suggesting even lower figures. The population is believed to be declining significantly due to habitat loss, poaching, and civil unrest in their native habitat of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
