The Global White Lion Protection Trust states there are only a few white lions in the wild remaining in their natural habitat in South Africa, within the Greater Timbavati and Kruger National Park region, with estimates ranging from a 12 to 13, but a few hundred exist in captivity. These animals are not a separate subspecies, but a rare color variation of the African lion (Panthera leo) that is vulnerable to extinction.
